Considering that the average American loses his or her virginity at the age of 17 and doesn’t get married until 25 or 26 years of age, it seems ridiculous that so many still believe that you shouldn’t have sex until you get married.

That’s why filmmaker Therese Shechter of Trixie Films set out to discover what made virginity so popular. She herself had held off from losing her virginity until the ripe age of 23, hoping to find Mr. Right. But, frustrated at feeling like the “oldest living virgin,” she decided to get laid instead. She never regretted her decision.

Another virgin who was ready to give it up is Mallory Rae Murphy, an 18-year-old who lost her virginity to Evan Stone on screen last July.

The college student and former model is currently studying economics and marketing at Texas Tech University, and she knew what a valuable commodity her virginity could be to the right buyer.

That “buyer” came in the form of porn director Michael Raven, who organized the shoot.

He gave the then-underage Murphy a manila folder of male porn stars and asked her to choose the one she’d like to perform the deed. Murphy joked:

“I really wish they gave me penis as opposed to headshots, but whatever.”

The lucky dude she selected was none other than Evan Stone, who also happened to be from her hometown of Dallas.

When informed of Murphy’s decision, Stone thought that Raven was having a laugh.

“I said, ‘Dude, are you kidding me? Is this April’s Fools Day for Evan Stone?’”

But he agreed to do it, as long as Murphy was absolutely certain that this was what she wanted.

Murphy’s initiation with Evan Stone was just the beginning. She’s since shot eighteen more sex scenes and worked for Wicked, Penthouse, Hustler, Erik Everhard, Porn Pros, Reality Kings, and Brazzers.

What Does Virginity Really Mean, Anyway?

Murphy’s decision to lose her virginity in such a public way would certainly be of interested to Shechter, who’s currently producing a documentary titled “The American Virgin.”

Shechter’s film explores what virginity technically means, why we value it so much, and whether it’s still relevant in a modern world.

In America, abstinence until marriage is still considered the moral high route, with a number of young celebrities publicly proclaiming their decision to wait.

Case in point: the Jonas Brothers. These teen pop stars, popular with the tweeny set, wear so-called “purity rings” to symbolize their commitment to abstaining from sex until marriage. Other young stars to wear the rings include Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Jordin Sparks, and Miley Cyrus. There’s even a purity ring iPhone app.

But is it realistic to expect young people to forgo sex until marriage? Aren’t promises made to be broken?

After all, Britney Spears donned a purity ring to build up her virginal schoolgirl image (although Justin Timberlake knew better). Jessica Simpson wore one and claims she honored her vow before tossing it to marry Nick Lachey.
