All you’d have to do is stop by the David Nolan Gallery until March 20 and check out “The Visible Vagina,” an art exhibition depicting the vagina as it’s never been seen before. The Vagina: Ugly or Gorgeous? We’ve written before about genital art, aimed at reclaiming the beauty and mystery of the human sexual organs. Women, in particular, have been taught to be embarrassed of their sexual organs and see them as something to hide, rather than something to celebrate. In fact, until recently, the only place you could see the female vulva in all its glory was in hardcore pornography. But porn has been very selective about the type of vulvas it displays – so selective, in fact, that many women have turned to plastic surgery to transform their ordinary vulvas into porn-perfect ones. (Read our story on designer vaginas here.) Lisa Rodger’s documentary “The Perfect Vagina” explores the powerful feelings many women have about their sex organs, and why they’d go so far as to have them surgically altered. (Watch it for free on Documentary-log.com.) Clearly, there’s a problem when women cannot see their own sexual organs as beautiful, and that’s why artists are stepping into the gap. The Vagina as Art The David Nolan Gallery in New York has gathered together works of art by dozens of artists, depicting that most private part of the female anatomy in all its glory The goal of the exhibition is to challenge the interpretation of the vagina as a purely sexual object. As the press release explains: “…The show is designed to make visible a portion of the female anatomy that is generally considered taboo…. If shown at all, this part of a woman's body is usually presented in an abject fashion, generally within the context of pornography, intended, in almost all cases, for the exclusive pleasure of men. The goal of this exhibition is to remove these prurient connotations….” Even if you can’t get to New York, you can view the exhibition online by visiting DavidNolanGallery.com. The Vulva Museum online is another place where female anatomy takes center stage. Although the site hasn’t been maintained (there are a number of broken links), the art is worth a look.
