Author Stefanie Iris Weiss is here to help, with her new book Eco-Sex: Go Green Between the Sheets and Make Your Love Life Sustainable. She sources biodegradable condoms, natural latex mattresses, organic cosmetics, and hand-cranked sex toys. But “committed greenie” Weiss isn’t the first to explore environmental practices between the sheets. The Greenpeace Guide to Environmentally-Friendly Sex is a classic, published online in 2002. It recommends avoiding the use of petroleum jelly and PVC, having sex during the day to save switching on the lights, eschewing aphrodisiacs like oysters and champagne in favor of “green drinks” like guaraná and caju, and making sure your S&M games – like “George Bush and Corporate America at the Earth Summit” – are safe, sane and consensual. Even Japan is getting in on eco-kink, featuring brothels run on clean energy. Bijo to Yaju (Beauty and the Beast) uses recyclable ropes and candles in its dungeon, and its napkins and toilet paper are made from recycled paper. Nemureru Bijo no Mori (Sleeping Beauty) tops that by offering organic food and beer. One of the least likely places you’d expect to find eco-sex taken to an extreme is New Zealand. New Zealand academic Annie Potts, co-director of the Centre for Human and Animal Studies at Canterbury University, has found that some Kiwis put their ethics where their bits are. She coined the term vegansexual to describe individuals who not only avoid consuming any animal-based products like meat and dairy, but also avoid having intimate relations with anyone who doesn’t share their diet. There are even dating websites set up just for vegans, like VeganPassions.com, VeggieConnection.com, and Vegans4U.com. It would appear that Weiss is r ight. “…Green sex is having its moment right now,” she says. And we here at Sex.co.nz will keep covering it. In fact, we’ve been covering ecologically-friendly sex since we launched, starting with eco-porn and continuing on to the latest trends in sex-ecology.
