MRI SexThere are all kinds of perversions in this world, and we here at Sex.co.nz have seen them all.

But there’s one thing we never thought we’d see … one thing we never really wanted to see … and that’s a couple having sex in an MRI machine.

If your thoughts just flicked to a naughty nurse and studly doctor combo, we don’t blame you. If only that were so.

No, this isn’t hospital porn, and more’s the pity. It’s actually sex from the inside out: what your internal organs look like when they’re undergoing “coitus.”

If you’re not squeamish, you can watch the video here. (Fast-forward to a minute and a half into the video if you want to bypass the boring bit and get straight to the sex.)

Ten years ago, at a university hospital in the Netherlands, scientists used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology to study eight couples. The couples needed to have a small to average height/weight index, as the MRI tube was only 50 cm in diameter. The couples were allowed to get it on in private, with a curtain covering the window linking the exam room with the control room, but they were only allowed to have sex in the missionary position with limited movement.

Although the women were able to reach orgasm during the study, none experienced a G-spot orgasm or female ejaculation. The men had a harder time maintaining their erection, due to the unusual circumstances and performance pressure. The couple who performed best in the study were amateur street acrobats, well used to performing in tight spaces under pressure.

From the study, scientists found that the penis curves into a boomerang shape during sex, and they disproved Masters and Johnson’s theory that the uterus increases in size during sex.

Ultimately, their goal was to provide a scientifically accurate picture of coitus, and they’ve done so. Now if we can just get that image out of our heads!
