Buying Christmas gifts is always tricky. You may think you’ve found the perfect gift, only to have your partner pull a face on Christmas morning.

Despite the dangers inherent in buying the wrong gift, Sex-Toys.uk.com reports that 1 in 4 British men are buying sex toys for their partner this Christmas.

The survey, based on the responses of 1000 men, adds that over half of all men would like to receive a sex toy as a gift.

Although we’d like to believe that 25% of Brits have sex on the brain at Christmas time, the report doesn’t square up with what we know of male gift-purchasing habits, which involve striding through the mall at 8pm Christmas Eve and grabbing the first item that catches their eye. (Nor does it square up with what we know of Brits, given that a recent study revealed that 1 out of 3 British men would rather play video games than have sex with the missus.)

But let’s play along for a minute and pretend that you’ll be buying your partner a sex toy for Christmas. How do you go about buying him or her a gift will elicit smiles of delight rather than of gasps of shock?

How to Buy a Sex Toy for Her

The Times Online suggests that the more you can spend on a sex toy, the better. Luxury toys are all the rage. Think discreet, well-designed objets d’art.

If you’re buying for a woman – especially if she’s never owned a sex toy before – try to steer away from toys that are made of plastic, modeled after a porn star, or marketed with pornographic images.

Sex columnist Suzi Godson explains why:

“The market used to be dominated by 12in, flesh-pink, realistically veined dildos that embarrassed women and intimidated men.… [But] for a woman who can afford it, a choice between a pink plastic ‘adult novelty' that has been made from a cocktail of toxins in a Chinese factory and a hand-tooled 24-carat gold limited-edition Jimmyjane is a no-brainer.”
