Today is a good day … a very good day … perhaps the best day in the history of the world's most beloved men’s magazine.
You know that stack of Playboy magazines you’ve been storing under your La-Z-Boy recliner since 1982? You can toss them out now. Your granddaddy’s Playboy collection is now online, FIFTY-THREE (53) issues spanning over 50 years of Playboy publishing, from 1954 to 2007. And you don’t have to spend a penny to look at them.
Playboy has just launched an online archive, now in its beta version. All you have to do to view it is download and install Microsoft’s “Silverlight,” a web application that delivers rich, interactive features.
Once you’ve installed the free program, you can view a range of Playboy covers, starting from the G-rated covers of the ‘50s and ‘60s, through the iconic covergirls of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Click on a cover, and you’ll get to browse the entire contents of that issue. Each page has been digitally scanned, advertisements and all, and you can zoom in super-close to examine minute details of each photograph or article.
The site is a collaboration between Playboy magazine and Bondi Digital Publishing, a software platform developer that plans to publish faithfully-reproduced digital versions of our best-loved magazine issues. The Playboy archive is their first project, with a Rolling Stone magazine archive due to follow.
