More recently, over the past two decades, a lot of porn films have been competing for the title of Best Porn Film of All Time. After all, you’ve got Michael Ninn’s “Latex” (1995) and “Sex” (1994), “Island Fever” (2001), “Briana Loves Jenna” (2001), “The Fashionistas” (2002) … the list goes on and on. Nevertheless, we have seen one movie – one franchise – slice through its competition and raise the standard for the porn industry to unbeatable heights. We’re talking, of course, about Pirates XXX. If you don’t have “Pirates: The Collector’s Edition” in your porn collection, then your collection isn’t worth its name. “Pirates XXX” is hands-down one of the greatest porn flicks of all time, and it’s got the awards to prove it. When it was released in 2005, it won a record 11 AVN Awards, 2 XRCO Awards, and 6 Adult DVD Empire Awards. Called the “Titanic” of porn films, the film cost nearly a million US dollars to make. Its producer called it “the most expensive porno in history.” It was a risky bet for Digital Playground. Although porn parodies of mainstream movies have long been a popular genre, few producers have been brave enough to reach deeply into their pockets to create what can only be called an “epic” porn film. But “Pirates XXX” had a lot going for it: a plot based loosely on Disney’s blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” series; an all-star cast featuring Jesse Jane, Carmen Luvana, Janine, Teagan Presley, Devon, Jenaveve Jolie, and Evan Stone; an original soundtrack so good that it was released separately; and over 300 special effects. You don’t expect to see special effects in a porn film, which is what makes “Pirates” so extraordinary. Part of the movie was filmed on an actual sailing ship, the “Bounty.” The ship already had an illustrious history in cinema, as it was used for the 1960 Marlon Brando film “Mutiny on the Bounty.” Scandal erupted when the ship’s owner, Tall Ship Bounty Organization LLC, contended that they were unaware that the action filmed on its decks would end up in a XXX movie. The beauty of “Pirates” was that it appealed to both male and female audiences alike, even audiences that weren't particularly fond of porn. In fact, Digital Playground even edited down the sex scenes in the movie for mainstream audiences and released it again, this time with an “R” rating. That was a first for hardcore adult movies. (With most porn films, if you took the sex out, nothing would be left!) But the story didn’t end there. The film was so successful that Digital Playground planned a sequel, “Pirates II: Stagnetti’s Revenge.” After its release in 2008, the two-hour sequel cemented the franchise’s reputation as “the next big thing” and racked up more than a dozen AVN awards. It needed to be good: it cost roughly $8 million, making it the most expensive porno ever made. Now, you can have the entire Pirates franchise in your home collection. Sure, there have been a lot of great porn films over the years: “Deep Throat” (1972), “Devil in Miss Jones” (1973), “Debbie Does Dallas” (1978), “Taboo” (1980)…
